Luckily, my conversations with friends went beyond their initial questions and concerns. By the end of my conversations with them, those who know me best were beyond excited for me. I have loved animals—especially primates—for my entire life. I was probably in the fifth grade when I realized that I could make a career out of studying animals—that others before me had done so and paved the way for future animal-lovers like me. When I read Jane Goodall’s In the Shadow of Man, I set my sights on going to Africa, as Goodall had first done to study chimpanzees in 1960. I held her stories close to me, always, as I moved through middle school and high school, trying to take in all that I could about animal behavior and primates.
